A colleague of mine performed what is termed a "surprise removal" of his dvd/cd device on his laptop (IBM TP R31) without performing the Safe Hardware Removal in Windows XP.

At the time, the machine gave an audible beep a few times, and he then inserted the floppy drive in the empty bay. At this time, the floppy drive was not recognised by Windows. A restart was performed and the floppy drive was accessible.

The problem that he faces now is that the Safely Remove Hardware wizard does not recognise either device when installed in the bay, but all other removable devices show up in the list. The device that is in the bay is usable as long as it has been there since a system restart.

Any ideas curing this problem? Is this an issue with Windows in no longer recognising the device or are we now dealing with a hardware issue?

Thanks in advance.

Can you access the BIOS and see if it is recognised there? I would be surprised if it isn't since you can access it.Just a thought.
