Hi, does anyone know what causes the compaq support paq to fail due to being unable to attach to the target machine. this is a stand-alone machine (DL580 G2)in a workgroup that works perfectly in every other way, the remote deployment utility of the support paq can even see the computer name if i browse for it, but still says it cant connect. I am logged on as the administrator,

any help would be... helpful, thanks!

The remote deployment utility uses the Admin$ share to deploy the software...
These are enabled by default on NT4 and 2000, so the issue is most likely one of these two;

1) The adminstrative shares are disabled

2) As the machine is in a workgroup you dont have admin rights to the box

I'd try this first;
run a command prompt
enter the following; "net use \\servername\ipc$ /user:servername\administrator replacemewithpassword"

without the quotes, you should get back "commmand completed successfully"

Then try and run the Remote deployment

If that doesn't work check that the admin shares are enabled.

thanks! Admin$, yep.
