after installing a new 5.1 server, i applied the support pack 2a (downloaded off novell's site). after a while, a message comes up saying that my name and password is not good enough to upgrade the schema. i then try to relog in as admin, but it still doesn't accept admin as good enough. i don't know what the problem is. i'm assuming that the admin name should be good enough to access everything, so i don't know what else to check...

currently, i only have the admin as a user on the server. i haven't changed any admin properties. i unzipped the 2a files on a workstation then copied them to sys:\supportpack\. from there i ran nwconfig then the 2a installation. i also did the backup option.

the tree comprises the tree name and 1 Organization. there is no OU. the network is only 1 server, 2 Win98SE workstations, 1 print server. protocol is IP (w/IPX compatibility.) clients are 3.3.

Well, I just added SP2a to 5.1 and it worked. Did you try doing the whole thing over again - starting out with the expansion of the nw51sp2a.exe file? I assume that you have checked the NDS effective rights of admin at both the [root] and at your O=whatever.....

Novell mentioned to me about another problem that may be of use. There is a known issue with logging in on a server that hasn't had ipx bound. There are a number of times a user has rights problems on server. Novell techie advises to bind ipx to your network card, unbind it, try logging in on server again. May not be in your case but any authentication problems try this first.

(IPX does NOT need to be bound all the time. It can be unbound immediately)

Make sure that DS.NLM is loaded on the server. If it is not, you will, of course not be able to login. I have a new IBM 5600 with the superfast controller and hard drives and it is just too fast for Novell. I had to include a LOAD DS.NLM statement in my autoexec.ncf file because it would not load on startup. The box was just too fast for the software.

I'm having this exact same issue when trying to install support pack 3 on 5.1. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Every time I have run into this problem it has always been that user context is not used. This means you need to explicitly enter "cn=admin.o=xxxx" then the password at the prompts. When appling a service pack NetWare assume that the user is working from ROOT of the tree and at the ROOT the admin user does not exist. Joshua Rothschild
