I am telneting into a remote HP-UX server and trying to invoke the SAM GUI, but it comes up with an error message saying sorry, you must have superuser (root) privilege to enter SAM. My userid is setup identically to our systems security person. We are in the same group. If I try to invoke SAM using his id and password it works fine. When I use my id and password it doesn't. I would think if we were setup identically, it should work for both. Does anyone have any ideas?

SAM is suppose to be executed be the superuser only, but for special reasons non-superusers can be setup to run restricted sam.
I believe you friend is setup to run restricted SAM and you are not.

I agree with cakonnor, you will need to log on as root, run sam and then add your user to the Restrictive Sam List.

You can also specify which menu's you want that person to use when they run sam. Very nice.

Best regards

Hi,

Generally, SAM requires superuser (user root) privileges to execute successfully. However, SAM can be configured to allow subsets of its capabilities to be used by non-root users. When Restricted SAM is used, non-root users are promoted to root when necessary to enable them to execute
successfully.

Issue SAM -r to invoke the Restricted SAM Builder under your friend ids to allow you to use SAM.

Do a MAN SAM for more information.

Good Luck
