What hardware are you using? It could be that the
NVRAM battery has failed. On older systems, this is quite
common.
When you power on and get the initial banner, does it show
the ethernet address as all zero's? This can be a good
indication that the battery has gone. Solution is to get
a new PROM chip from either SUN, a reseller, or second
user from sites such as ebay.
