I have my Ultra 60 connect to LAN. When I push out the 10/100Mbps RJ45 jacks and re-insert the jacks into the 3com LAN switch. The ethernet port is unable to go up. I have to reboot the machine in order for the system to recover. Is there any problems for my Untra 60.

Thanks.

The NIC should resync if the parameters have not changed. If speed or nemask, etc. is changed or if it just doesn't reconnect, reset with "ifconfig hme0 -a broadcast +" Al

I try to reset with the command. The NIC is still unable to go up. When I use ifconfig -a to veiw the status of the interface, everthing seems to be OK. What is the problems that cause the NIC port down.

Thanks.

I am not clear on what the problem is. When you "push out the jacks" do you mean that when the system is up, you disconnect from existing network and reconnect to 3Comm? Then you leave 3Comm connection and reboot and "recover"? Al

I push out the jacks when the Server is up and running. And it disconnect from the existing network. Then I reconnect it to the network(3com switch). The NIC card is unable to get up and the server is unable to connect to the network. I leave the 3comm connection and reboot the server to reover.

Thanks.

One more time. Are you first disconnecting from a network other than the 3Comm then connecting to the 3Comm? Or are you disconnecting from the 3Comm and reconnecting back to the 3Comm? Al

I am disconnecting from the 3comm and reconnecting back to the 3 comm.

The NIC should resync within 1 minute - are you waiting long enough before you reboot?

When you pull the network connection, a message should be displayed on the console that the connection is broken; when you plug back in to the network, the console informs that network conectivity has been reestablished - yes?

One of the network guys says that there is something called "spanning tree" on the network switch - takes about 50 seconds to reconnect network devices.

I think that you should check out the network switch - I think that your Ultra 60 NIC is OK - I have never, in 7 years, had a bad network card from Sun. I am sure that it happens, but i would go after the 3Comm first. Al
