Hi,

I'm not a unix person so bear with me pls;

i'm starting to pull my hair out so i thought i would ask before baldness set in...

i have an Avaya IR V1.2 and i've got the patches to update. The system runs on a Sun Fire 280R. When i ran the update from the unix prompt it advised that it had to go into single user mode, i said yes, it shutdown and came back up but wouldn't let me connect via IP (the single user mode bit).

The problem is that i can't connect to the system at all. The is no keyboard/video module installed. I was assuming that i could connect via the Serial A port but this isn't working either; I've tried every cable variety i can lay my hands on to no avail.

Does anyone have an suggestions/help??

Thanks,
Chris

do you have a null modem cable, I believe one is required.

are you able to get the box back into multi-user mode, where you can log into it, if so check this:

from root:

type: eeprom <enter>

what is input-device and output-device set to, if screen, keyboard, you will want to change it to ttya.

you can change it like this:

eeprom output-device=ttya
eeprom input-device=ttya

once you reboot the server using: init s to go into singe-user mode, you should be able to connect to the server via a winders machine.

I use: 9600-8-None-1-HW on hyperterminal

thanks for the answer djr111... another question tho...

if it has been put into single user mode how do i get it back out of that if i can't get connected using the serial connection?

Thanks again,
Chris

It may not even be in single-user mode, it may actually be at the 'ok' prompt. w/o being able to see it, we are just assuming. If it did go into single-user mode after a reboot, then that probably means the OS has an issue that needs attention, maybe a fsck or something.

what command did you initiate to make the server reboot?

If you did a init S, or a reboot -- -r, then it probably is in single-user mode
if you did a init 6, reboot, it can be at the "ok" or single-user

if you have no KB/video, turn power off than on, and prey you do not have auto-boot? = false, if it is set to false then it will drop to the 'ok' prompt. I know if you had a KB, you can use <stop> <N> to reset the nvram, which should make auto-boot?=true, i'm not sure if there is another way.

One last thing you can try is hook up a USB keyboard, I believe that system has USB on the back.
and in the blind type: boot <enter> if you were at the 'ok' prompt this would start the OS.

<enter> = hit return key

in either case though, if you have the null modem cable and hyperterminal, connect it, then power cycle the server, you should see something on your screen. if you don't then it is probably set to go to a monitor.

hope this helps
