I really like this website and it has been helpful to me alot. I just have one request. Is it possible that the tek-tips.com team create a way to filter out posts per dates or something.

Why?
Sometimes I would like to review some information in the past but know what month its in but have to browse through every discussion.

If possible to filter out information by subject.

That sounds like a winner. Why don't you pass your suggestion to Dave Murphy: forummanager@tek-tips.com?

Another member had already mailed the thread to us. Thanks for the suggestion. It has been passed along to our Technical Director Doug Trocino for consideration. It is a good idea. :)

Alt255, thank you for directing them off the forums to e-mail us directly. In the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of every page are the proper contacts for suggestions like this.

Thanks again!
We have a new keyword search utility that will allow a full text search of posts that we've been working on for a while now. It should be ready by tomorrow...:)

I think the keyword search will be even more useful than a date filter (although that is a good idea :-) since you may know what the date of a post was last time you saw it, but it may have changed due to other posts.

The current filters work well for ordering the threads, but do not filter anything out. We have tried filters such as the date filter above, and, although they were very useful, too many members found them confusing, especially when the filter applied had no results. (We got a LOT of e-mail saying we no activity or that threads kept "disappearing").

I hope this helps, and I hope the keyword search utility adds the functionality that you are looking for...:)
The keyword search utility is awesome. In fact it gives me some ideas for you guys.

Another suggestion, if possible. Is it possible that when we (the users) log in to our sites by entering our user id and passwords that the first interface we should see are:

1. All questions ANSWERED should be topmost with regards to the user. Assuming that we entered a post and would like to view request ASAP, it is important to me - not everyone who logged in as happening now. (You may have some indicator to stop the discussion on this question once we - the users - have gotten the answers or feel that the needed information given is enough. Thus placing this in our secondary priority lists)

2. Below our crucial question (as stated in 1) we can have all other posts on to the forum that have being stopped by the indicator mentioned above, but applies to the user only, so since the time the user subscribed to this site that will be the listing and this listing will be displayed according to dates - beginning and ending dates, to restrain the long listings (or maybe by something else, you're the designers). I know the big issue will be archiving and deleting with regards to disk space for you guys. It would be cool if you allow the users to determine when to archive information - 6 mths, 3 mths, whatever interval specified that will not hinder the good services you are providing us.

3. Can you give each subject a unique identifier. An example would be (a true scenario) I was looking up Datamarts and Datacubes in SQL Server and made a post to that forum. Someone told me I should check in the Data Management forum for the answer in which he had answered for someone. And you know - what if I was looking in the VB forum - we're talking HOURS!!!!! Instead that person could have given me the id - say DATAMNG0000001 or whatever. You can code per topics as well - topics in the sense like in VB you would have DCOM, ADO, OLEDB, Classes, etc.

4. Then the following links would be all other posts that apply to the forum - which will be after the NEXT link. You can also have top 100 topics per links about special topics with regards to the topics id specified above. To tell you the truth I don't know about other users but once I click the NEXT link four to five times and see the same questions that I've seen before I'm out of this forum to something else. So keep us on your site every minute and seconds if possible.

This site is very useful and I hope in your development of making this website a better you allow these options to be review. These are suggestions and you can look at them for technical restraints and issues regarding your development team, but I believe in you guys.

Is it possible to relate this discussion to everyone on other forums.

Also, the best place to place these suggestions would be when we first log in to tek-tips.com. This is pertaining to number 1 "All ANSWERED questions..." instead of user profiles, etc. The user profile may be a link or so.
More good ideas! But they aren't related to Visual Basic Version 5&6. Please use the "Contact Us" link to email the suggestions to Tek-Tips. They won't be visible to the community but they will receive serious consideration from Tek-Tips management.

Yeah, we really read our mail too. :)
ps Thanks Alt255 for the heads-up on this....

TLiberty,

A good way to get your top priority questions to the top of your threadminder list is to mark them for email notification. In threadminder, select the checkmark in your navigation options (the icons at the top of the list) and all your marked threads will float to the top....

All the threads have unique identifiers, however, the problem with adding a feature like this is implementing it onsite so that people can easily figure out how to use it...

As far as stopping threads when they've been answered, we have discussed doing this at length. We came to the conclusion that, especially in the computer technical industry, there is always more than one solution to any problem, and there's nearly always a better solution than the one you're using now... Stopping a discussion may prevent someone with a better solution from posting it. I've seen many times in Tek-Tips where a member will get a solution, thank the responder, then a couple days later someone else gives an even better solution and the original poster will come back with something like "WOW! That worked even better..."

These are great ideas, and I encourage you or anyone with ideas for this site to e-mail me at forummanager@tek-tips.com (Dave's right, we really do read our mail...:)
Doug Trocino
dtrocino@tecumsehgroup.com
<a href= Forums
Technical Director
