Before I get too far into this and regret it, I thought I would post the symptoms and get a second/third opinion on this repair.

System came in errors on boot, missing dll etc.

Scanreg was autorunning and restoring registry most boots.

My computer empty when opened, visible in Win Explorer.

Rogue entry in startup came back when deleted.

Any installs attempted, or most programs opening come up missing oleaut32.dll.

I normally would just backup and reinstall, but this system is a special case d/t setup etc. and if I can get away with it I would like to save the existing setup.

ANY help or suggestions welcome....

Have already......run removal for virus files and rid of them, run SFC to restore some of the damaged files from the OS disk....all the basics.

Thanks in advance!

Are you sure the hard drive isn't trashed? What happens when you run diagnostics on the hard drive.

Thanks for the speedy reply...

You could do an overlay. SE is the best at it.
And put the install stuff on the hard drive if you have room. Or on an extended logical drive is even better for reinstall purposes.

Thanks Ed, yes that is in the plan...

Just finishing up the memory diagnostics to make sure I am not spinning my wheels here...

I was really hoping I could just replace a few files and be done with it...no such luck by the looks of it so far.

Unless I can find something else I guess I am on the hunt for the 98 CD from the client....not provided of course...

You mean you don't carry one? Kimber.

I carry the cabs...dont usually install it unless they have it...lol

I have one around here somewhere.....hope your shop doesnt look like mine right now....buried...

Just for the record, I copied the files manually from a shop test computer, there were five of them after I ran SFC.

A couple of software problems with flashplayer etc, but other than that....back to normal again.

(whew!)

Hope this gives somebody a hand in the future..
