I have a subreport in the report footer of the main report. I have the details section of the subreport hidden (drill down ok) bc I need the user to be able to drill down. When I click on the header of the subreport while in the main report, it just shows the same header and footer...the drill down doesn't activate. Am I missing a step somewhere or need to move the subreport?

Thanks!

Not sure if SuB Report have have drill down

Why not make it an on-demand subreport. You can link it on a field in main report so that when users click on that the SR opens and shows relevant data.

Not sure how I would do that? It's running on a different set of criteria. Overall, not familiar with on-demand subs.

I assume the subreport is linked on a specific field or fields.

Choose the main field which is used for linking.

Right Click on Subreport ->Format subreport select Subreport tab
Check on demand SubRep
Click formula editor next to Ondemand SR caption

In the formula box choose the corresponding field which will be linked to field from mainreport

Save and close

When you preview report you will now see corresponding field value as light blue and underlined. Clicking that will run SR you can now replace the field in the main report with your SR users now only see value once.

Thanks. When I do that, choosing either the ID or parameter from the main report as the field in the ONdemand SR caption, I get the "formula result must be a string" error.

Nevermind, I see that it's a caption so I just entered some text to display. The problem with that is that it then suppresses the total that I want displayed with the main data report. The drill down is just fluff that the end user wants to be able to click on.

Sounds like the subreport is not grouped. You can drilldown to details on a subreport in the report footer if you first create a formula like this to group on in the sub:

whilereadingrecords;
""

This will create a group containing all sub records. Then display the summary result in the group header and hide the details. The user would have to double quick twice to get to the details--first to enter the sub, secondly to drilldown to details. You could add text instructions, e.g., "double-click twice to view related details".

Thanks, lbass. The sub is actually grouped by person already. I have this set up just like any other report where I want drill down available, but no dice. I removed the ondemand part of the sub, bc I think that's very confusing for the user. So I have data in the main report and the sub in the report footer. I have the details section on hide/dd ok and grouped by your whilereadingrecords suggestion and also by name (group 2). It gives me an area to click in to see the names I've hidden, but doesn't actually show any names...just lets me click to a blank page. Whatever I'm missing has to be easy bc the functionality appears to be there, but it's just not manifesting in data.

You don't need the group on my formula if you already have one. The user should be able to click on the person group header to get to the details, but it still might take two double clicks. I'm assuming the subreport is NOT linked on the person field--if it was, you would only get results for the first person on the report.

You should also check to make sure you don't also have the details section suppressed. You don't have any conditional formulas in the suppression area for the detail section, correct?

The two clicks will be a problem for the picky user in this instance, so I need to avoid, IF possible. I have the sub grouped on person and the name in the details section, on hide (dd ok). When it's like this, there is no available space to double click on to drill down. I've tried removing the name from details and letting the name be available on hide (dd ok) of the Name group, but it still doesn't come across on click, again giving no area to drill down. The sub is linked through and ID on the eventID field, not a person.

If you are using a sub, I don't think you can get around the double drilldown. If you have one group on {table.personname}, then the group header field should be visible--the drilldown happens by doubleclicking (twice) on that.

If the sub is linked on an event ID, I'm assuming you only want results for one event ID, correct?

Yep, one ID. The main report has a parameter pulling out the one ID the user wants to see. Okay, if I have to have a dbl drill down, I'll do it. Appreciate your help.

Sorry, thought I was done, but I'm not. When I put the name in the Name group header, I hide it (dd ok). When I run the main report, it still gives me no space to double click for drill down. What basic am I missing here?

You should only have the details hidden. You need the group header to double click on (twice).
