If i need to subnet the address 192.168.1.0 to allow for 6 hosts, i would need a /29 subnet mask right? The first host address in the first subnet would be 192.168.1.9
The first host address in the first subnet would be 192.168.1.1.
The reasoning is that systems today can use subnet zero. In fact, they have been able to use subnet zero for several years; and most curriculum has been updated. 192.168.1.0 /29 is subnet zero in this case.
Now, if you are using training material that is still stating that you cannot use subnet zero, then yes...192.168.1.9 would be the first host address. However, that material would be very outdated.
This is something i picked up from the 4th edition sybex CCNA book by Todd Lammel. He also states that in reality you can use subnet zero but that Cisco does not recognize it as a valid option in thier exams. Thanks for the info
yes bier - you're technically right, but as UKHicks stated, Cisco is still teaching the first and last subnet are non-usable, even in 4th edition books.
