I am currently trying to change my Subnet mask (255.255.255.0 to 255.240.0.0) and when I restart it Fails to initialize my Network Interface NIS NFS etc etc.

We run a DNS/NIS server and the subnet mask on the main server is still the same. Would this cause the problem? It seems illogical that it would.

Any ideas?

Thanks

What's between you and the "main server" then? (on the network that is)

My (imperfect) understanding is that if two devices on the same segment share a network number and a subnet address they should be able to talk -- and that a switch wouldn't affect that (it working at a lower layer and all).

You sure there's not a router involved here?

How you are configured your NIS/DNS server in your system? If pssible Explain it in detail so that I can help you .
1.Domain Name (Is your DNS domainname and NIS domainname are same ?

2./etc/host entries
3./etc/resolv.conf
4./etc/nsswitch.conf
5./etc/rc.config.d/nameservs
If you let me know about this then probebly we can help you out :)

There should be some confusing about your routers. Check with your Networking group, since they are the one wire the cable from routers to the switches. Find out what's the Router IP address (Gateway) and also the subnet address.

Hi TECHMAN007

Before, you were using a default Class C subnet mask, and you have changed to a subnetted Class A.
Have you changed the IP address on the card to an address in the new range, as the old IP address wouldn't be in the range for your new subnet mask.

I found that due to certain default settings I had to reset one of the network parameters with this script which loads on boot prior to Lan initialization:

/usr/bin/ndd -set /dev/ip ip_check_subnet_addr 0

Thanks for everyone who replied to it though!
