Trying to fix someone else's comp, so I'll post what i know...any sort of video/audio app's stutter when the cpu is tasked with something else, as simple as opening the web browser. The prime suspect is the CPU...the original call was that the comp was shutting itself off randomly, and upon opening the case I found the cpu fan/heatsink (p4) was completely caked with dust. The comp itself is about a year or so old, but should have no problem doing what it is. Drivers are up to date, and virus scans come back clean. Just trying to rule out any other problems before I point the finger at the cpu.

Update the AV program, and check for viruses. Also, remove any spyware with Ad-aware and Spybot.
If those do not help, then do a clean boot. If the problem goes away, then something running in the background is causing it.

I'm assuming that you re-applied the thermal grease when you cleaned the heatsink?

This was supposed to be the future.....Where is my JetPack?!

Exactly what CorruptedLogic stated, I did the same thing. I did not add the thermal grease and it cost me a new CPU.

I didnt remove the heatsink simply because i didnt have my thermal grease with me. spent a nice amount of time with a dry toothbrush and some canned air though. But I do suspect what grease that is on there is more than likely dried up and not being of very much use.
