I am used to working with 98SE and back OS. I am having problems with my home network. Two XP systems using DHCP provided by a LinkSys router. Both systems go online without issue. Printer is an HP 6122, set up with LPT1. Last time I had problems with the printer I changed from USB to parallel port and got the printer to detect properly. Sometimes I can see the other system through the network. Other times I can not. (today I cannot) This screws with file and printer sharing. Both systems are in the same workgroup "DWEST", both are set for DHCP. Router is assigned 192.168.1.1, System one has name "LIVINGROOM" and has been assigned IP 192.168.1.100. System 2 has name "OFFICE" and is assigned IP 192.168.1.101. From the "Livingroom" I can ping loopback 127.0.0.1, I can ping itself, 192.168.1.100. I can ping itself using it's name "ping LIVINGROOM". I can ping the router "ping 192.168.1.1". I get a timeout when I try to ping the office system using its IP or its name. From the OFFICE I can ping itself using loopback, its IP, and its name. I can ping the router. I can ping LIVINGROOM using its IP, but get a timeout when I try to ping using its name "ping LIVINGROOM". Both systems have Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Print Sharing, Microsoft TC/IP ver 6, and Internet Protocol(TC/IP). Anyone have a clue what would allow them both to be online, see the router, but not be able to share files or printer?
Thanks in advance.

Enable Netbios over TCP/IP.
right-click your Network Connection, Properties, Internet Protocol - (TCP/IP), Properties, Advanced, WINS tab, and click to enable Netbios over TCP/IP.

Check both machines using ipconfig /all that the 'Node Type' value show Broadcast, Hybrid or not-defined. Any other value will not work and you will have to make a registry edit for the Node Type.

Open notepad and copy/paste the below as node.reg :

********* start copy/paste below this line
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters]
"NodeType"=dword:00000001
"DhcpNodeType"=-

********** end copy/paste above this line.

Save node.reg, and double-click to make the node type change to 'Broadcast'. Reboot to test.

Thanks for the response. I found a different answer during my online research today. I had installed an antivirus program called PC-cillin. It's software includes a firewall that is over-zealous.
I am currious what your fix would have done. I have had random problems occur between peer's on my network where one machine refuses to see another, and never been able to figure out why. Does running netbios somehow make those shares available?
Thanks,
Dave

Thanks,
That site answers some questions I have had for quite a while. My classroom has mostly 98SE machines. I have just been learning about XP recently.
