Stup** question, What is MS Exchange?

I got a call to go to an interview for a job, for the IT section, and they also want the applicant to have knowledge of MS Exchange.

Could someone explain to me with a few words what exaclty does this Exchange works?

Just an FYI if your not familiar with it don't try and "hoof it" in the interview. Now that I am in this job I am VERY glad I told them I have little exchange experience (only exchange experience I had was housing a server that I had to shut down services on from time to time). It has ALOT more configuration and setup features than I ever dreamed existed.

So far I have learned about the DNS depenancies, Creating new user accounts, creating contacts, email forwarding when a user is out of the office through the server. In all I am learning a bit and soon I'll at least be able to restore a mailbox
