How can I limit the student's access to stand-alone Emac. On the MAC server I can control what program they can use, but on the stand-alone machines, there is a parental control option which I think providing only limited control capability. Is there a way, software, etc. to provide effective control?

System Prefs/Accounts/Limitations.

You have to create an account for the kid to get to the limitations tab. There, you can grant certain privileges to the computer and allow/disallow access to apps. You would definitely want to disallow access to most Utilities.

You aren't using OSX 10.5 already are you? It introduces simplified parental controls - - but the standard controls should still be there as jmgalvin notes.

I don't see Limitations in Systems Preferences -- Accounts.
I'm running 10.4.5

Is 10.4.5 to 10.5 a free upgrade?

10.5 is not a free upgrade - Only developers should have it now.

You need to be signed in as an administrator to affect others' accounts.

You have to create a new account to get to Limitations. Click the little + sign below the list of accounts. You MUST give the account aname before you can go any further.

I only see the tabs Password, Picture, Parental Controls

I created new account, but still not seeing the Limitations.

Hmm!

We're on 10.3.9. A new user account gets Password, Picture, Security, Limitations.

Try going to Help and search for something like "limitations" or "access to applications"

You might alo go to Help and search for the general "accounts". That should give you a long list of subjects.
