Hi,

What I am trying to achieve is a single gray stroke/border around two overlapping rectangles which are different colours.

I don't want the stroke going through any of the overlapping areas - I've attached a URL of a small gif to show you what I'm trying to achieve.

I can't do it in pathfinder because it changes the colours to all one colour. I believe there is a way to do it by joining layers but I can't figure it out.

Advance thanks to all you troubleshooters out there!

Mark.

I have an answer to this: if anyone else was wondering ...

1) remove stroke from rectangles
2) group the rectangles
3) in Appearances, add a stroke to the group
4) drag the stroke below the content in Appearances OR with the stroke selected in Appearances, Effects/Pathfinder/Add

Mark.
