Strict vertical spacing of paragraphs - how?

I need to start each paragraph at one-inch intervals. Some may be one word long, others much longer. The normal "space before" and "space after" commands won't keep each paragraph beginning at those one-inch intervals.

I'm stumped. Anybody know how to do this?

Thx - Chuck

I don't understand why not.

Do your paragraphcs have a style? If so, you can add sufficient spacing before and/or after the style (in the style options) to get the spacing between paragraphs you want.

How are you trying to add the para spacing?

Well, the "space before/after" uses the current position to offset surrounding text by a fixed amount. If I were to put a 'space after' of half an inch, the next paragraph begins half an inch from the end of the current paragraph. I don't want that. What I need is an instruction that tells the next paragraph to begin at the next whole inch point on the document. Sometimes that will be five lines of white space, and sometimes only one line between the current paragraph and the next whole-inch point.
I guess what I need is a way to set *vertical* tabs.

OK, I understand now what you are trying to do. I thought you wanted to make one inch spacings between paragraphs. What you actually want is for the paragraphs to start only at certain positions on the page.

So, no, you cannot set up PM to do vertical tabs. You will have to manually add the appropriate spacing after each paragraph - perhaps setting up some horizontal guidelines at one inch intervals will help.

It could be done by setting non-printing guides at the required vertical positions, and then using them to position Text Frames. The text can then flow from one Text frame to the next.
