Hi, I've just installed Windows 2003 server and Windows Media Services to begin unicast streaming but have run into 2 problems -

1 Getting access to the file from the Internet - I've no problem port forwarding a port on my router so that when I use the 'Pull' method, I can simply log on to my IP and forwarded port (e.g., presently But what or how do I find the URL which I'm broadcasting from?

2 Authentication & Authorisation - Although comfortable with using the 'pull' method from the encoder, I want to be able to use Authentication & Authorisation, so I'm using the 'Push' method. Would you please confirm how to switch this on as there seems to be so many different settings / places?

Many thanks, Stephen

Hi, have you tried posting to the windows newsgroups? you may have more luck there.

Thanks elmurado

I posted to both the Windows Media Services and Server 2003 newsgroups before tek-tips but have had no response whatsoever. That has been my experiance so far with the M'Soft newsgroups

I was hoping that tek-tips 'Windows 2003 Server' forum might have the answer

Thanks elmurado for these suggestions

When I input the (dynamic) IP address (which incidentally has changed again) into the browser, I cannot access the broadcast

I'd already been to the 2 links above but did not help - that is where I found the 2 newsgroups

Thanks anyway, Stephen

How often does the IP change?
Also, for your port forwarding, can you do a port forward with say 3389 and rdp to the machine in question-then you know that the forwarding is working properly(you may have already done something similar).

Thanks elmurado

I don't have a static IP address but this dynamic address has not changed in months and for test purposes, I'm trying to keep it as simply as I can. Having said that, I have registered with dyndns.org but don't want to do anything until I get this running sweet and then I'll use the diverersion service.

The real problem is I don't know the URL to hand out to viewers. IE, my server is called STEPHEN with a publishing point called test. My IP address is so when the encoder is pushing to 'test', do a visitor access the stream using the URL or should it be or or etc?

Im able to forward a port on my router if required; eg to port 31100 so that when I 'pull' encoded, I can view it fine on but again I cant figure out where to use the settings whenever I 'push' through the server

When I use an apache server we have setup here(we use it for an app called OCS inventory) I login either by the IP or by the machine.domainname/folder Now as it is an internal server and is not visible outside it doesn't need to have the domain name registered. So if I were to say that I had a website called and wanted everyone on the web to have access to it I would need to register elmurado.com with a domain registrar-eg Verisign and then the whole DNS system around the world would over time get to know that my IP of x.x.x.y was elmurado.com and vice versa. If I didn't register the name then I would be able to access the site but only by IP address(I think-never seen this before).
Can you see the site from inside your LAN? ie if you put in

Thanks elmurado, but I'm trying to access the broadcast from outside the LAN, ie on the internet (I can access it easily within the LAN)

I've tried etc but cannot connect. I may be wrong but isnt the IP address of the PC the same as a domain name which is properly DNS registered?

Actually, you're right, with port forwarding, it should just work as you need it to. However, everyone would have to put in their browser to access your server in the way that you could. Your router will forward any requests on that IP/port number to the IP of STEPHEN. Then this should open up the web page if the server is set to listen on that port and feed content out when a request is
made. What are you supposed to see when you first connect?
I'm afraid i don't understand the PUSH/PULL thing you've described so I'm not sure what's causing the problem there. But i'd hazard a guess that you'd need a few more ports open for auth-i can't see it doing the auth all on the same port-maybe you'll need to forward more than one port? Hope that makes sense.

I've just realised from continuosly searching for answer that it might be that there is no 'Control Protocol' plug-in visible in the Properties tab, however in a similar one there is which seems to allow for certain ports to be used, etc. This could be the answer but I cant find out why its not present or enabled other than the possibility I'm using a Windows Server 2003 Standard Evaluation disc?

I compared it with the last page on
