recently when ive booted the computer it occasionally hangs at a black screen after the xp pro logo goes away, sometimes with a frozen mouse in the middle of the screen, sometimes no mouse at all - just black screen. half the time the computer will reboot on its own from here, and the other times i have to reset it manually. neither case happens all that often, but enough to bother me. usually when it reboots, it works fine and a 'recovered from a serious error' box comes up in windows as it loads. the box usually has no detailed information, but sometimes there are two boxes, the second of which specifically mentions geforce2mx400 drivers as the culprit of the hangup. i think the card is the issue because i already had serious video issues with win98 which i replaced with a clean install of xp pro.

ive tried updating the drivers from nvidia's site, and it just messes things up like makes title bars black and other things illegible and invisible.

so is this the video card? is it worth replacing it? or could it be the motherboard (abit kg7-lite)? what should i replace?

thanks for any help

I'll take a guess that it's the drivers, but it's a fairly experienced guess. I had loads of trouble trying to find the correct Radeon driver for a workstation a while ago. I finally got it, but the system would hang every time just as Windows was supposed to start. That was using the recommended XP driver. I went though all the XP, NT and 2000 drivers I could find and finally found one. So it may pay to run through all the drivers you can find before you replace the thing.

thats the thing, i downloaded the newest drivers from nvidia, and those didn't work. i even downloaded one step older drivers from them and those had the same effect as the new ones. strange black lines and invisible things - generally garbled video.

im starting to wonder if its the motherboard, cause i went for the budget kg7-lite instead of the kg7 and am starting to remember hearing bad things about the kg7-lite.

Hi, i had the same problem today.
This is what i did -

I have a Geforce Mx 200 T400 Siluro Card-
1. i got my old card back, which was a 8mb card S3 Savage
2. Loaded it up, installed xp again
3.Suprsinginly, it never hung
4.After it had installed, i shut down pc and put Geforce card back in and works fine.

try that, i assure you, it will work.

I have been having a similiar problem. I have a QDI KinetiZ 7E motherboard, with a Nvidia Geforce2 mx 200 running on XP Pro. and it keeps hanging. It is so frustrating. I too have downloaded the from Nvidia and still to no avail.

Sometimes it will run for about 2 hours without hanging, or it could hang in middle of reboot or 10 mins after. It does not matter what programm I am running at the time, if it wants to hang it will.

Any more suggestions?????
