I have noticed some strange programs running. When I press ctrl+alt+del in Win98 SE, there are 2 programs running (Upd and Mdm). If I chooose EndTask, it says they aren't responding and closes them. What are these strange programs? Have they got to do with Office XP? I have nothing else running at startup. Do they take up system resources?

Life is a bad joke -- don't take it serious...

Try looking at this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

In there you'll find a whole bunch of stuff that runs at startup.

You might find the programs in question listed here in which case the string name might give you a clue as to what the program does. I'll give you this for free: mdm is Microsoft Debug Manager. It is relativly harmless and I've never heard of anyone getting into trouble by not running it. I have no idea what upd is though.

Hope this helps.
