Strange Saving Problems in Word and Excel

Strange problem here. One of my users reported that for a week or so ago, his Office suite started to have problems saving to the network. From Word, or Excel, when he clicks Save As, and pulls down the list of available folders from the seekbar, and selects our network share, it will hang there for a minute, and then display it like it should. Then he would select a folder in that share, and it takes another minute, and then proceeds.

From Windows Explorer, the same thing goes without any interruption, this only happens in Word and Excel when saving, and only to the network share.

When the user clicks Save As and chooses a folder, does the folder contain mixed file formats (i.e. Word documents AND Excel files). IF so, and there are a fair number of files, it may take that small delay to filter out the appropiate file type.

A few years ago I worked for a state agency here in Az. We had one department on a floor that at times when they saved Word documents over the network, the document would become corrupt. We never did find the problem, at least while I was there. And it didn't happen all the time.

The folder does contain mixed file formats, but it doesn't happen to everyone, just one or two people.

Try uninstalling update 908531. There's a bug with this that MS are working on att.

How can you uninstall this update. I have done the fix on Microsoft's site, i have did a system restore.

You go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Make sure that the UPDATES check box at the top is checked. Then you will find all the Windows Updates listed. Click on the appropriate update and chose to REMOVE.

Since i had did the system restore and removed that update from our WSUS server it is not on the machine yet the problems still exist. Any other ideas?

TF1 thanks for your reply

Another cause is a bad link such as a mapped drive that no longer exists or other rogue link that has been added to the Explorer tree.

I am having the same problem. It just started yesterday. I'm going to try and remove the update, but it's only on a few computers. I checked into mapped drives and came up with nothing.

I too checked the map drives and that is not the case either. Microsoft has stuck us this time

i have done System restore, I have uninstalled update, and i have done the fix on Microsoft's website any one have any more sugestions?

I have had to fix two computers with this "Save As" problem that started Monday. On one computer, Excel 2003 somehow uninstalled itself and I had to reinstall the whole program Office 2003 again. Thank you for the above suggestion from tf1: uninstalling the Update 908561 did work. [thumbsup2]

This is copied from another tech group. It has worked for me!!

My experience with this nightmare since yesterday may be of interest to you
and others. I tried the system restore feature which did nothing other than
remove the updates from the add/remove programs list. Even if you remove the
restore point, the updates still do not list. As a result, now you cant
remove the update, which wont really remove anyway.
I followed another suggestion and renamed the file verclsid.exe to
verclsidold.exe which has solved all of my immediate problems, which were
centered around IE locking up and the inability to navigate.
Hopefully this may assist you until Microsoft gets out of their coffee
break. I noticed that the update website still wants me to install 908531.
Are they listening?
