Hey all,

We´ve installed a Lotus Notes Domino Server with Windows Standard Server 2003 and the Partition tables are like:

C: 10GB System --> Single Vmdk
D: 10GB Notes_Binarys --> Single Vmdk
E: 900GB Notes_Data --> Splittet Vmdk with 451 Pieces

Now the Problem:
It happens nearly every 1 - 2 Hours that the Performance gets very poor in the Windows System and the Linux Vmware Server has a Load Average of: "10.58, 7.64, 6.87"

vmware-vmx output from "top":
PID 4963
PR 5
NI -10
VIRT 1856m
RES 89m
SHR 84m
%CPU 136
%MEM 3.3
TIME+ 2375:09
COMMAND vmware-vmx

The system is not swapping and the Virtual Machine "Notes Server" has a memory amount of 3072MB which is only running in the RAM of the Host system.

The Vmdk´s are in a SAN and they are mounted by the Hostsystem.

The FibreChannel Controllers are:
QLogic Fibre Channel HBA Driver: 8.01.07.15
QLogic QLE2460 - PCI-Express to 4Gb FC, Single Channel

What can i do to improve the Performance of the Windows VmWare Notes Server and why is the CPU Load so high from the vmware-vmx (Virtual Machine)?

Any help would be greatly appreciatet.
Thanks in advance and Regards.

Hi

Why is your E: drive not one vmdk file ?
I have a couple of Domino 6.5 server on ESX 3.02 and have had no problems. What version of Domino are you using ?
Make sure your C: Drive has plenty of disk space available, also check the size and location of your Windows swap file - set it up as if it was a physical machine - I would locate a nice size swap on your E: drive, say 4096Gb qould be fine.
Check you have not setup multiple processors for your VM, when they may not be used - It can make things slower.
Are there any scheduled tasks which may be creating work for your Domino Server every hour or two. ie replication or clustering creates a lot of activity disk and network.
You may have other tasks which run regularly, is it a mail or application\web server?

Regards

Dave

To spi200:

I see you are successfully running LN6.5 under ESX3.02. We are planning this same migration. I have 3 W2000 Notes servers - 1 DBase and 2 Mail servers. We have about 1000 mail accounts. We are getting ready to install and configure 3.02 ESX and want to P > V each server over. Can you provide any feedback as to your experience with the P>V, ongoing performance issues, etc. Some of our Tech Group have concerns and I am trying to gather as much info as possible.
