I have a very strange problem at my company. I'm not sure whether it is Sendmail, network, or mail client (Outlook) related, but I thought I would start here.
Recently I set up Sendmail 8.12.3 on Slackware 8.0 for one of our remote office locations. After a lot of tweaking and DNS problems, it is working....mostly.
The problem is a very bizzare error message reported by Microsoft Outlook 2002 while connecting to the POP3 server on port 110 of the Slackware box. The first time outlook connects to port 110, it sends/receives everything in it's queue just fine. Five minutes later, when it is automatically performing the same function, the following error appears:
"! Task 'Account name - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC0F) : 'The connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'"
"! Task 'Another account name - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x80042108) : 'Outlook is unable to connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'
After this, Outlook must be restarted completely. Then once again, the first time connecting is ok, and after that the same error message appears. Oddly enough I can connect to the mail server from a different subnet/office and I can send/receive with no problem. Also we tried using netscape instead of Outlook, and there was no reported error. The error did not exist on the old mail server(Windows SLMail), only after upgrading to linux sendmail.
Out of curiosity, I ran a network sniffer on a client PC and from that PC checked for new mail on the sendmail server using Outlook. The sniffer (SnifferPro), reported:
"Duplicate network address" I sent the results to a friend, who's opinion was that two network interfaces in our office were trying to obtain the same IP. I have asked our on-site sysadmin to verify this, and he says it should'nt be an issue. (Not sure I trust his judgement really ;P)
Now I'm not really sure what else to try. We have applied the latest patches to MS office, so that Outlook would be up to date. We can't just switch to Netscape because of this one error message, but it is really annoying users, and my manager is very frustrated.
If you have any ideas, or need any more info....please let me know!
Thank you,
