Since installing my new Benq 2420HDBL monitor (connected by DVI-D single link cable) to a Windows Vista PC I am finding that when I type into some forums and Facebook and Flickr I am getting a line of vertical barcode type images under the text. This does not occur in my applications or incidentally on this forum.

These are the details of my graphics card.

I have checked my DVI-D connections and they seem to be fine. What I cant understand is why it only occurs on certain pages. I have just noticed that I now have white lines across the grey at the bottom of this message. Puzzled.

1. when attempting to show pictures use the TGML language tags, direct img placements or image tags do not work here...

to get your picture displayed,
5744153398_8c5ab591b5_s.jpg

use the following syntax:

[ignore]
5744153398_8c5ab591b5_s.jpg
[/ignore]

2. have you attempted to update the drivers?
done any malware scans?
tried another OS (e.g. a Live LinuxCD), to see if it is OS or hardware related?

Hi Ben, Drivers are updated, malware scan is clean, unable to try another OS.
Hi RClarke, How can I tell if its happening in BIOS, as there is nowhere to try typing in to.

I have been on to Benq tech support and they say that it's not a monitor problem but a setting on my PC, but they don't suggest what. What I can't understand is that I only get the problem when typing into text boxes (such as this) on the Internet. The problem does not occur in any of my applications such as word, Photoshop etc.

You don't mention what browser you're using - very likely IE, since you're on the Vista OS. Download FireFox and try that on the same sites, you may find the problem doesn't occur. I've had a number of strange issues with IE on several PCs, and they don't happen if I use FireFox. Some are of such long standing as Printing a page from the browser - in IE, the right edge of the text is truncated, but in FireFox (and Netscape in olden days) the print was complete.

Ahh, ok, since it doesn't happen in apps just on the internet, try a different browser, but this is a software issue, not a hardware issue, I thought you were getting the display issue wherever there was type on the screen, but it only happens when you type on a webpage.

Thank you FredWagner and rclarke250. The problem is solved. I had IE8 and Firefox on PC and both of these had the problem. I've just downloaded Opera and very pleased to say I now have normal type.

piaff1 - Good solution with Opera. Now if you have the opportunity, find out what it is that makes those web sites give you the problem. Are the optimized for Opera, or for the Mac ? or perhaps for the new tablets and fancy phones ?

Fred Wagner

This doesn't make much sense - Firefox and IE BOTH unable to display some of the same web pages correctly.

If it were only one browser, I might believe it, but two?? Stay tuned to this one, I bet the problem will pop up again.

what it actually looks like is a type of artifacting of the graphics subsystem...

possible solution: disable hardware acceleration in FF4...

Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: Use hardware acceleration when available

does it disappear in FF?

unable to try another OS.
I wonder why? as it is easy as pie to download a Linux LiveCD (e.g. Parted Magic), then burn it to a CD, insert that CD into affected computer, change the BIOS setting to allow the CD-ROM to be the first BOOT DEVICE, and then boot with that CD...

PS: the above linked ISO contains FireFox as a browser...

I have just checked my Java version and updated it, but I am still getting the vertical lines in Firefox.

I have now disabled hardware acceleration in Firefox and problem still occurs.

Updating Java was just a side note, but a good idea for anyone.

Three thoughts:
Try a different monitor if you can. Problem follows???
Put in a different video card Problem follows??
Hook a laptop up to the monitor Problem follows??
