When my windows 2000 machine is rebooted sometimes it will run a chkdsk right after the windows screen loads and begin deleting profiles from the Documents and Settings folder. I believe it has something to do with a conflict between the domain profiles and the local profiles on the machine. It is very strange how it would just deleted the user profile and all of it's contents without first prompting the user. Is there a way I can troubleshoot this problem better and prevent it from happening again? Several of my co-workers have lost valuable information from this error. Thanks.

Are you sure you are describing what's happening accurately - and if so have you run a virus scan? Chkdsk is not going to randomly delete profile folders unless there's something radically wrong (like its not chkdsk, but something masquerading as it).

Are you on a domain? Are you plugged into the network? Does it do it when you are not on the network (unplug the network cable)?

This is happening at some of the computers where I work. I believe that autochk is what is deleting the files. Yes the computers are on a domain. THis problem seems to happen randomly though. My guess is because the domain profile overwrites the local profile upon network login...but that's just a guess. The file deletion happens when the computers are connected to the network, but it happens just after the windows 2000 screen shows and loads. Thanks.

if u have local and domain users with same id, windows will create different profiles for them on local machine.

Can you please give the whole story (if you really want help and this is not a wind up)

The only local user on the machine is the Administrator. All other users are domain users. What happens is that the domain user will shut down their computer and go home for the day. When booting up their machine the next morning, autochk runs and deletes all profiles under "c:\documents and settings" . This problem has caused severe problems because of unrecoverable file losses, and it happens randomly. We have Norton Antivirus on all the domain machines and it has not detected this as a virus. It does seem like virus activity but it could also be a windows 2000 error. Thanks.
