Strange DNS Problem

I have a laptop that I was cleaning a lot of spyware from. After running SDFix, Spybot, Combofix, Smitfraudfix and a few others. I cannot get it to connect to the internet.

I can ping any IP, but when I try to ping a name, it will not resolve. I know the DNS Servers are the right ones and are working because they are the same on my computer and work fine.

Here is the strange part, when I ping a name, instead of saying "pinging it says it is pinging a lowercase 'o' and a 'Y' with a ':' laying on top of it. If it was somehow translating every name into this "oY" name it would never resolve.

Is there any way this could be happening?

Thanks
Steve

I was posting this from memory last night and got it backwards. When pinging an IP address I get the "oY" and when pinging a name I get could not find host
Any ideas?

Possible progress in anyone is interested. Repairing Windows xp seemed to take care of the funny characters. I still have no name resolution. If I go to system information and look at the protocols. I have an entry for a webhancer tcp/ip protocol. It looks like the spyware that was earlier removed didn't get completely removed.
