Strange cable problem, network connects and disconnects constantly

I installed some Cat 5 sockets as a favour for a friends company. Wish I had never bother now!

I tested them with a cable tester (cheap and nasty - just checks each wire in turn for breaks) and then I patched a phone through to every socket.

The phones worked and still work perfectly. The problem is that when thay patch data through to the sockets, the network connection was very erratic. The icon on the tool bar said "network cable now connected" and kept switching to "cable unplugged".

Anyone seen this before, have I just cabled it up wrong?

Thanks,

Mike

Maybe the fact of redoing the jacks solve a bad termination problem. However because the switches can auto-sense then maybe there's a mixup of jacks cabled both in A and B now (after redoing the problematic ones)... Poor guy if they ever change their switches to non auto-sensing ones, then they might start introducing cross-over patch cables into the mess instead of reterminating the jacks!

Servamatic.

Its christmas afterall so I thought I would do you a favour. Your posts read as quite obnoxious. I am sure you wouldnt want this so maybe a bit of careful proof reading will prevent people branding you a t055er.

Oh and for the record, I should have told you the answer when I asked the question as I agree this would have made the thread shorter. Unfortunalely I didnt know this when I first posted. If you read through, some of my discoveries were made on a second visit. Also I asked more questions therefore increasing the length of thread.

Like I said, the problem is now solved and I would like to thank all of your who contributed to this discussion in a friendly, helpful manner!

Your assistance is appreciated, Merry Christmas to you all!
