I have a BCM 1000 upgraded to 3.6 as a test unit. The unit died, with only a single light on the Motherboard. No amount of rebooting or power off (unplugged) helped.
Removed HD, tested & no good.
I was told this was the MB and a known fault.
I just received an old BCM and switched MSC, HD, and Modules. The new BCM showed the same signs until I reseated all modules and then it powered up immediately.
I retested the old BCM with no Modules & no MSC. The unit powered up. Replaced HD, Modules, and MSC & and the unit powered up.
Any ideas? Should I have remembered that the BCM is a glorified PC and applied basic troubleshooting first?

could you direct me to the service note # or something that describes the motherboard problem ...
i have a BCM1000 with the same thing - the power supply/ fan wouldnt run and just one lamp on the MB when powered up

PAA-0238 Global from Nortel.
Try removing all components. HD, Modules, MSC, and HD and then power up.
As I am writing this I am testing a BCM by adding one component at a time and letting it run for an hour to see what is killin the unit. I have to believe that it is a module. I will follow up with the results.

Test 1. My Station module passed.
Testing the trunk module. (Analog) Will follow up.

I have had that problem recently.

The light simply indicates there is power going to the unit.

The problem I had was there was a faulty DSM32+ that was stopping the unit from powering up.

Replaced unit and it is working like clock work again.

in the one i have sitting in the 'lab' the HDD is not letting the power supply to work ...

that is an intersting thing ...

I have beaten on the "dead unit" and have gotten it to run after reseating everything several times.
I have just imaged a new HD with 3.6 and I am trying to figure out the initializition process.
Anyone know the correct procedures and what it says when it is complete?

Hi senk1s

I would remove all the components but power supply, processor and ram. If you get post beep then you know all the hardware components are good. I would then remove the front panel and plug in monitor and keyboard connect the hardrive and check to see at what stage your system failed. If the hardrive is bringing down the power supply. That is a strange fault even for a pc.Generally the first problenm of that nature is bios related.

Good Luck

senk1s,
mrmarshall is right. Strip the unit and test. I am just completing this process on the first of two BCMs.

I have used an off the shelf HD, imaged it, and initialized it. You need to get to step 6.2 to complete.
I have never figured out which component was killing the unit, but after reseating everything FIRMLY!! several times there seems to be no problem.
I will be doing a cumulative patch next to see if it will take on this HD.
Does anyone know how to identify the correct modem with the initialization menu?

here is what i did to figure out the HDD is the problem ...
now i'm trying to get a HDD - it was a 3.5
* isolate the SMPS - all the cables were hanging loose
from the power supply
* connect the motherboard alone - it works + the fan
* then i connected the cards 1 by one MSC,then LAN, then
WAN, then modem
* then i connected the HDD powersupply cable (tried diff
connectors) no luck - back to the single LED

I used an old 20 gig I had lying around and it worked perfectly. I imaged, initialized, and then ran cumulative patch 2.0. I then reinstalled my key codes.
So far so good.
I will let it cook over the weekend and see if it is still running on Tuesday when I return.

Here's a quick check to see if its your mb that needs to be replaced....if you see the word "PORTWAY" across the top middle edge on the board or if you see PW810 in the Main Config Menu, then its probably your board. I'm dealin with several of these right now.

Follow up.
BCM 1000 would not go into bios. Watched on a connected monitor & keyboard.
Did EVERYTHING, no go. Finally stripped all cards, HD, and for no good reason removed the CMOS battery.
Came up check sum error but let me into the Bios and I was able to reboot and system works ok.
