Strange/annoying change in report behaviour

I have just started producing the next version of my app.
One of my reports consists of a 'block' of information in fields relating to the person who is the object of that record. I am able to fit 4 persons records on a page above the footer.

I also produce a 'compressed' report of the same design but with a limited number of fields in the 'block' such that the report detail strip in condensed form is only 2cm high allowing many persons records to be printed on the one page.

My existing condensed report failed to display so I started again with the full report and progressively removed fields to create a new condensed report information 'block'.

However when the Page Footer is put higher than 5cm the report will not print. I know it used to in previous versions of my app.

I need it to be at 2.2cm to make my condensed report sensible that is without a large block of blank space after the 'block'.

Is there any known reason why I can't put the Page Footer right up to 2.2 cm or thereabouts?

I don't understand your logic. You want to set the page footer height 2.2 cm. I can do so without problems. But you complain the footer can't be higher than 5cm. I can do that too without a problem. Just drag the page footer bar as you like.

So please describe it differently. What's your real problem?

Is it perhaps your printer? Have you tried changing to a PDF printer? This will get rid off any printer specific margin settings on top of your report settings contradicting each other. A PDF printer has no physical limitations of sheet feeding mechanisms or such, which might limit what your real printer can do.

The real problem is - I cannot set the page footer slider higher than 5cm without the report failing to print.

That is I am trying to get multiple 'blocks' of detail on one page.

The standard report prints 5, the 'compressed' should print 10 but I can only get 7 as I can't reduce the 'block' enough.

Facts

The compressed report started as a copy of the full report - no changes to printer involved - same table being printed.

GenDev,

I'm also confused about what you are asking.

I suggest that, for the moment, you forget about the number of "blocks", the height of the detail band, and the difference between your standard and condensed reports. Just focus on the kernel of the problem.

You are saying that you want to print a report with a footer that is at least 5.5 cm high, but when you do, the report fails to print. Is that correct?

If not, please explain the problem in the simplest terms, as I have attempted to do in the previous paragraph.

If my interpretation is correct, what actually happens when you try to print? Do you get an error message, or what?

Mike

My apologies friends,

The problem is giving me many senior moments!

The slider that I am trying to place at 2.2 cm is the detail slider - that is I want a very small detail band of 2.2 cm with the normal footer of 1 cm or so.

Clicking the [Print] button on my form just causes a 'flash' with no report preview as I get with the full report.

Its very difficult when I'm trying to describe a problem which would be so much simpler with an image to show you the setup.

My last attempt to change the position of the detail slider has resulted in success. I now have a page with 10 records as I have wanted.

Thanks for your attempts to assist me - I was pretty frustrated.

So, you want to create a report with a detail bacn that is 2.2 cm and a page footer of 1 cm.

There should be no problem at all in doing that. In fact, I have just tried doing exactly that, and it works fine.

Given that the report "flashes", it's likely that the problem is not related to the heights of the bands. It's more likely to be a problem with the data. Either the wrong work area is selected, or the table or cursor in the selected work area is empty. Is that possible?

Mike

Just for future reference: If a report (preview) just flashes and ends the reason is you don't feed any records. Either the table is empty or a FOR condition you set is haveing an empty result. And/Or the report has no dat in its DE (if you choosed that as data source).

That has nothing to do with the report layout.

Bye, Olaf.
