I have a server called Server1, which is in a domain.

There is an alias set up in DNS for this server

if I go to start > run and typ \\<ip address>

it works as expected, I can see the shares no worries.

However if I type \\aliasname i get prompted to authenticate.

If I enter the domain admin details, authentication fails.

I am also logged on to the server as doman admin

Any ideas what is going on?

TIA

From MS KB281308:
Windows Server 2003
To resolve this problem in Windows Server 2003, complete the following steps:1. Create the CNAME record for the file server on the appropriate DNS server, if the CNAME record is not already present.
2. Apply the following registry change to the file server. To do so, follow these steps: a. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
b. Locate and click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
c. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:
Value name: DisableStrictNameChecking
Data type: REG_DWORD
Radix: Decimal
Value: 1
d. Quit Registry Editor.

3. Restart your computer.

Make sure that your IP settings (especially your DNS settings) are set-up correctly. If you are entering domain credentials (such as DOMAIN\USERNAME) yet you still can't authenticate, this usually points to your IP settings and DNS server info being wrong.

Good luck,
