store locator database

I'm in the process of designing a store locator database that is searchable for the retail stores in a city and state. Which would be better to impliment the city/state query or is it zipcode based? Another question is what elements come first, second, third and what user information is needed in order to obtain results? I have an idea but would like more input. I'm looking for someone that has maybe designed one so maybe I can get an idea or see a sample of what tables are used to make this fully functional.

You are in the best position to answer the questions than us since you will know the needs of the database. But here are some guesses...

city/state query or is it zipcode based

Why not both? You will have an address for each store which will include city, state and zip code. The City/State query should be fairly easy. Drilling down by zip code would be a little tougher I expect, but still useful and worth the effort.

what elements come first, second, third and what user information is needed

I don't know what you mean by elements, and what you feel is important as elements. But in Access you can change the order of things. For example, list a product by price and quality, or by quality and price, or by manufacturer. To do this, you have to make sure your database captures the information.

Not me, although I have been know to design a few databases.

Thanks for the positive response. Maybe, there is somebody who has designed a store locator database and could have some tips on the one they designed and how it analyzed the data. If there is anyone with positive feedback on the tables they used or how their store mapping worked it would be helpful.
