Store.exe causing 100% CPU Usage

I wonder if anyone can help me...

We have an NT 4.0 Server on SP6 running Exchange Server 5.5 SP4. No mail is going out from the server via the internet mail service but we are recieving messages. Every time that the MTA starts, the Information Store (STORE.EXE) consumes 99% of the CPU. I have tried a variety of MS solutions inc. updating to SP4 and also running a full intergrity check on the EDB files but this revealed no problems. I must confess that I am a bit stuck now.....

There is no mail in the Queues but there are loads of .DAT files in the \exchsrvr\mtadata directory and I am not sure if they are supposed to be there. Deleting them causes the MTA not to start.

Any ideas?

Sounds more like an underpowered server - how much RAM/swap space have you got?

Also, is it constantly 99%? - the message store can be a bit lumpy when you are starting up - the database can be many gigabytes in size. Check it 10 mins later and see whether it's still hammering the processor.

I to have this problem. For the last 10 hours the processor is at 100%. We don't have Norton. So that rules that one out.
Help before the thing burns out!

I ran into this problem before and spend 5 long hours with Microsoft Techs and tries every possible there is and store.exe is still @99%. The patch doesn't seemed to work. I have discovered that by re-applying SP4, it fixes the problem. My store.exe has been down @10% after re-applying the pack.
