Dear experts,

we are in the NW 7.1 suite installation process for
our EMC Clariion based SAN.

As newbies we have (at the moment) 2 questions:

1. Why do we have to use at least two systems to run
storage node functions and the server tasks.
What is the philosophy behind this separation?

2. Concerning the server which provides control and
scheduling for NW operations:
Is it communicating via the LAN with the clients or
via the SAN i.e. is it necessary to attach it to the
SAN switch?

Many thanks in advance for all comments!

1.
Storage Node deals with data, and the serveur deals with
indexes.
They are not necessarily separated, it can be the same server. You have to consider to separate on performance considerations.

2.
Communicating between client and server is via LAN. You can mix LAN clients and SAN (Storagenode) clients.

@speculos:

IMHO it is NOT possible to install the Storage Node and
Server onto one system.
For example, after the Storage Node installation on our
Windows 2003 system there is no active buttom for the Server
installation. You can only Change, Repair or Remove the
component.

So my first question still exists.

if you select the server install from the start, then that includes the storage node.
Server install includes, server, storage node and client
Storage node includes, client and storage node
client includes, just client

To dasa123 (Rainer):

RichS24 is absolute right. As there is no backup server without a local backup
device, it must also be a storage node.
