I've inherited the network admin position with my company and I'm not too farmiliar with 2000...

I have two win 2000 domain controllers in a WINS replication scenario...One of the machines is blue-screening, so I want to remove it from the WINS replication and remove it from the domain and rebuild it...

As far as the WINS replication, do I need to remove the bad server from the replication before I take it off the network?

Can someone please give me some details as to how to remove this machine from the WINS replication? Which machine do I remove it from? Are there certain steps you should follow in order to do this correctly?

Thanks in advance for your help! This site is a great tool for us newcomers!

On the "good" machine go to Administration Tools. Find the WINS tab and open it.If you right click on WINS Server on the left hand side and go to Propities you will see a tab to do with replicating (i think) remove your "BAD" machines ip or hostname from there.

DO a dcpromo on the bad machine to remove it from Active Directory and reinstall Windows 2000 server and you should be sweet.

If i am wrong i am sure i will be corrected.

After I remove the "bad" WINS server from the WINS tab on the good server, do I have to remove/uninstall WINS on the bad server or can I just leave it alone and demote it. Do I have to remove it from active directory? Do I also have go into each DNS machine and remove the DNS entry from them?

You can uninstall Wins on the bad machine if you would like. On the good machine open up the Wins Server and do a search (by right clicking on Active Registrations, Find by Name, and doing an * to bring up all records) look for the Wins record that contains the IP Address and Computer name of the BAD Server. Remove these entries.
