Hi, I've tried looking in the registry & editing the preferences, but to no avail. How do you stop MSN Messenger from launching (placing its icon in the system tray)every time you start windows xp pro? I've changed the preferences for the program itself but it simply won't die! thanks in advance [noevil]

Below is what I found in About.com... I will try it tonite cuz it is so annoying... Please post back if you find it helpful... Thanks! [noevil]

Tip #550: Removing MSN Messenger from WinXP More Tips

I know it sounds hard to believe, but some of you out there may wish to remove MSN Messenger from Windows XP. However, it does not appear from the Add/Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel. In order for it to show up there, you must first edit the file named sysoc.inf. This file can be found in a folder named INF, which is a subfolder of the Windows folder (or in some cases the winnt folder, depending on how your OS was installed). You can open that file in notepad. Look for the following line:

msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7

and remove the word "hide" while leaving the commas on place. Close and save the file, and then open the Add/Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel, so that you can remove it like any other program.

The suggested command at the ref drumdip provided is far less involved and equally as effective.

if you want to continue using messenger but don't want it running all the time try this:

open messenger. then click tools> options> preferences tab. uncheck the three boxes in the "general" section. click ok and close messenger. it won't come back on start-up.

if you go to user accounts in the control panel
go to advanced
to to manage passwords
and delete passport.net\*
this wont delete your passport, but will stop it on your comptuer, it will stop msn dailing up automatically.

(I hate it when I want to spend 5 mins checking my email and get into a conversation with my mother)

Hi,

This might be a silly suggestion, but why not just go into the Options on Messengers' Tools menu, click on the preferences tab and then untick the "Run this program when Windows starts" option. I also untick the "Allow this program to run in the background" option as well.

Seems a bit simpler than messing around with msconfig to me :)

Cheers,
Jez

Because Windows has a tendency of turning it back on again if Outlook or Outlook Express are used with a configuration that relies on messaging.
