We have a question about just one of several Excel workbooks uploaded to a SharePoint library. The owner of the document opens the item from our Fileserver vs SharePoint, edits it, even renames it and finds that the SharePoint copy is updated and renamed. He does not want this behavior. We have not figured out why this is happening nor how to stop it. I don't think the doc is shared and not sure from my experiments that that would cause this either. Any ideas? Thanks, tmnelson

Dear Monitor - how do I move this? I appear to have placed it in the wrong section. tmnelson

Repost wherever you need.

Have you tried opening a doc from SharePoint, do a Save As (to your desktop)...

Then open the newly Save As doc, edit, and save.

Does it still update SharePoint?

Hi, I'll see if the owner thinks this is a work-a-round to which he can adjust, if it works. What causes him to not be able to open and edit a document from the FileServer and not impact SharePoint? Especially with what appears to be only one of several Excel docs?
Thanks, tmnelson

These were uploaded from within SharePoint from the FileServer, as were many of our documents. Sometimes the windows explorer method of moving or copying is used but the owner said he had uploaded as he normally does. fyi - tmnelson

1) Is FileServer a product or are you talking about a normal file share on your network?

2) The file now lives IN SharePoint, yes?

3) If the file is opened FROM SharePoint, then edited / saved, it will save BACK to SharePoint.

Yes, sorry for any confusion. We have the file share and now SharePoint. We have not completely moved away from the file share. This file was uploaded from the file share server to SharePoint, however, the owner has kept the original on the file share. The owner is uncomfortable with having all his docs on SP. So he keeps the original copies on the file servers, updates them till he is ready to upload to and replace the SP 'original'. He's not using SP as it should be used but none the less I don't see how this one doc is linked between the two. He may have done something accidentally I just have not figured out what/how.tmnelson

REAL odd...

is there any chance he created shortcuts to the documents that now live in sharepoint?

i tried to recreate the issue with no luck.
moved an excel file to our network share.
opened sharepoint.
opened a library in explorer view, and copied the excel file in.

i then opened the excel file form the network share.
made some changes.
saved the file.

open the same file in sharepoint.
nothing had changed.

I have not been able to recreate it myself. I figured if I could I'd be able to work backwards. I will ask him about the shortcut, I assumed (always a bad idea) that he was going straight from the file server. Thanks, tmnelson

Thanks ehaze. Your comment about shortcuts led me in the right direction. He was accessing this doc via his recent docs list and that happened to have been accessing the one on SP. Thanks, tmnelson
