hello guys

we have arcserve 11.1 and a msl5026 compaq tape library, windows 2000,sp5 patch

our daily backup runs onto 4 tapes but over the past few weeks it been failing with (tape is from a faulty batch or tape drive is faulty)

i honestly think its bad media but the question i have is

if i was to load more tapes in could arcserve be setup to skip a faulty media and move onto the next tape and save your backup job from failing

any help appreciated

Gary

Hi,

Use the Local Job Redirection functionality of arcserve.

You can find details about this feature and usage on BAB help.

Hope this helps.

don't get your comment about sp5 patch - neither ARCserve r11.1, nor Win2K has an SP5.

Downside of using re-direction is that you have to dedicate drives only for use with re-directed jobs.

Vschumpy, correct me if i'm wrong.
If a user has a library, only the slots are grouped into different device groups. right ?

So, if Gary's library has enough slots, he could distribute the slots across Device groups. So, should a job hit a bad media, it would jump over to the next device group, meaning, it would use a different batch of tapes.

Not sure off the top of my head, last time I read up on this, the job re-direction required it's own separate, dedicated resources which would only ever be used for re-directed jobs (similar conceptually to having a hot spare drive in a RAID array).

I concluded at the time it would be great for anyone using a large library with say a dozen drives, and couple of hundred slots, but not much use for most regular users who would be unlikely to justify setting resources aside just for this.

Hi,
You don't need any hardware especially for this function. If you have a library then on Server Admin just switch the Local Job Redirection function on. You can type down the groups you DON'T want to use with Local Job Redirection. If job fails because of a tape or drive failure, there will be created a new custom job (it's name will be Redirected job...) that will use any of the groups that are not in exclude group. I use this function with no problem.

thanks guys for all your help

great forum full of folk with expert knowledge

will be looking into the Local Job Redirection functionality of arcserve

give this a bash once i read up on it and report back with a bit of feedback to help anyone else who encounters problems of this sort

all the best
