I have a ibm 4.3 server that is booting and it keep saying "NIS server for domain xxx not responding", is there a way to stop this so i can log in and see what the problem is??? thank you

I think your machine is a NIS client for an NIS server (or used to be). So one way to overcome this is to login in maintenance mode and correct the /var/yp/binding/<domain_name>/ypservers file by adding your NIS server name. Here is the link for more info on troubleshooting:

Or remove the NIS:

how exactly do i get into maintenance mode? everything i have tried isnt working.??? i believe the nic is down, but i would like to verify it before we just start replacing stuff..
thanks

i guess what i really need to know is there a way to get to a command prompt? the GUI wont come up, says SCSI errors, and the dumb terminal says NIS errors...how do i break thru either one to get to a command prompt???
thanks

That's why you have to go to maintenance mode to get a command prompt!

In your case the NIS service is started from the /etc/inittab which won't be the case if you are in maintenance mode.

That's how you start in Maintenance Mode:

And that's how the maintenance mode proceed:
