I'm trying to reinstall the basic XP files to a SATA drive, but get this error: 0x0000000 (0x80000003,0x809F1575,0xF79C5840,0xF79C5540). I have done this several times witout problem. I have gotten the teh same message while trying to install a new SATA drive. The only reference I find to the generic STOP in the MS KB is something about a SoundBlaster joystick. I'm unable to install many other programs.

What is this? How do I fix it?

Background:
Several weekends ago an Norton Internet Security toolbar message showed up while I was browsing the internet. I wasn't able to open or close this, so I couldn't see what it was. My browser froze and I finally ended rebooting. After that, I couldn't get a Welcome screen. Restoring by overwriting the XP files fixed that, but I wasn't then able to reinstall Norton. I reformatted and reinstalled XP from scratch, and reinstalled Norton so I could safely do the MS security patches and SP2.

Windows Updater wanted to install a new version of the downloader, but was unable to. I worked through a troubleshooter (KB822798) and it asked to unregister and re-register a list of dlls. That allowed updates to start, but later I got a message that said the same dlls I had re-registered were not signed by MS and could make the system unstable. Did I want to continue or remove them? I decided I would be back where I started if I removed them, so continued.

I managed to update to SP2, but had continuing problems with getting security updates to install, with Oracle having services that would not start, and a total failure to install the Visual Studio beta from CD. I decided to look for viruses again and ewido found not-a-virus.tool.autoloader. Cleaned that.

I decided to change drives - and tried to install a new SATA drive and there got the same message as above. That turns out to be because XP has to load SATA drivers at the "Press F6 for SCSI drivers" point. Ucch, I didn't have a floppy drive in this machine, and the one I installed got recognized by the bios, but just ran all the time, so wouldn't recognize a floppy. So, now I can use the 2nd SATA drive as a slave, but not a primary. (How did I manage to install on the old SATA drive in the first place?)

For now, I'm stuck with trying to fix the old primary So:
Is there a way to deal with the serious error message?
1) The replacement drive installer said that the primary drive was not seen by the bios and to turn autodetect to automatic. It is turned on and it shows the drive as being recognized.
2) Is this related to the signature problem? If so, I couldn't follow the rest of the troubleshooter to restore the signatures on the dlls.

Is there any way to install the new SATA drive as primary?
(Why would the floppy I installed not work? It was from an old machine) Then I would try to low level format the original, or dump it.

The FIRST thing to do if I was you: sfc /scannow utility to check for any file corruption. It sound to me. as you noted...you have several problems ... lets try fixing them one at a time...1st sfc /scannow to correct any corrupt system files...

That's interesting. I didn't know this utility even existed. It ran (with an MSDN XP SP1a disk in the CD) without reporting any problem. I am still not able to install ASP.NET 2.0 (my test case) At least it doesn't lock up, but reports a problem when looking for downloaded components. Its able to exit without locking up.

Progress. What next?

An alternate strategy I'm exploring - the computer is a SFF Shuttle (the reason for no floppy) I wondered how other people are getting SATA drives installed. Several are using a utility called nLite to create an XP cd with the SATA drivers included, so at F6, the drivers are on the CD. I'm using Maxtor drives, and the MaxBlast floppy creator will also only run to a floppy. Any idea of how to get the extracted SATA drivers?

Thanks much

With the Disk on some times SFC will auto correct & never tell you. a floppy that runs all the time normally means the power plug was backwards..also a corrupt driver can do the same..I have at times used a GENERIC Floppy Driver..other wise test a different floppy.

Not RECOMMENDED... recommend any old cheap 20 or 30m IDE for boot... next i'd slipstream SP2 onto the SP1a CD.
My way'
I wrote this at the time v.1213 was released in beta.
you can use any name you want since you have to type these in manually
recommend you keep them short and precise..Yes there are some programs out there which claim to do the same..
but I found if you can understand MyWay.. it works on all versions if/when typed in correctly. Start -> run ->type here

<drive>:\<what> -s:<to drive>:\<what> uncompressed
c:\1213-sp2.exe -s:c:\winxp

c:\winxp is uncompressed file from the ISO....
after you get your notice that all was successful recompress all the files
into a new .iso
i rename my C:\winxp to WXP_SP2.1213

c:\1213-sp2.exe -x:c:\sp2.1213 uncompresses the sp2 into new dir.
then u can use winiso to replace the needed files

-x = extract to
-s = upgrade
That way you have all the SP2 upgrades installed the CD uses the same Old SN also.. since it is basically the same only upgraded.

I managed to get MaxBlast to copy the old install to the new drive, and then ran a registry fixer (CCleaner). That allowed me to run the XP install past the stop error.

Now I'm back to SP1a and am having the same problem with the Windows updater - it freezes IE, or stops while downloading the new version of the updater.

Slipstreaming seems like the way to go over the long run. I may just buy a new floopy - $10/15.

Is there somewhere I can download the patches and SP2 and install from my machine?

Bob Hagan

Well...

Computer stores are selling XP upgrades w/SP2 for $89.95.
From reading more about slipstreaming I realized that the network install SP2 was actually a download, not a streaming update that would lockup.

Things seem back to normal. Automatic updater works. Thanks for the suggestions.

-I still don't know how I managed to get a SATA drive installed without a floppy when I first built the machine.

-MS really has to do something about getting SATA drivers into the install without requiring a floppy drive. They are getting very common, and floppies less so.

The KB article about unregistering, and reregistering dlls, and then having XP say the dlls were unsigned was really unhelpful. Don't they test these things?

The SATA problem will be fixed for the next version of windows (Longhorn), based on what I have read so far there will be a totally new installation system, but as Beta 1 is not out yet we'll have to wait and see.

Microsoft GAVE - FREE XP SP2 upgrade. They were even in the Post Office here... the rural mail man delivered one copy to every house in the county. not the upgrade just the XP SP2 CD... you can download it from the Microsoft site. or maybe you should buy the SP2 FREE CD then send that registered copies to Microsoft... that XYZ is selling the SP2 upgrade... then you could own XYZ...

Other area: I have several XPSP2 ppl that are using/running SATA & there has been NO Problems that we have found so far....

<the rural mail man delivered one copy to every house in the county> Wow. I guess we're not in Kansas.

<several XPSP2 ppl that are using/running SATA>
Yeah. That's what's really strange - I had no trouble setting up the original drive.

Thanks again for the help.
