I'm trying to reinstall the basic XP files to a SATA drive, but get this error: 0x0000000 (0x80000003,0x809F1575,0xF79C5840,0xF79C5540). I have done this several times witout problem. I have gotten the teh same message while trying to install a new SATA drive. The only reference I find to the generic STOP in the MS KB is something about a SoundBlaster joystick. I'm unable to install many other programs.
What is this? How do I fix it?
Background:
Several weekends ago an Norton Internet Security toolbar message showed up while I was browsing the internet. I wasn't able to open or close this, so I couldn't see what it was. My browser froze and I finally ended rebooting. After that, I couldn't get a Welcome screen. Restoring by overwriting the XP files fixed that, but I wasn't then able to reinstall Norton. I reformatted and reinstalled XP from scratch, and reinstalled Norton so I could safely do the MS security patches and SP2.
Windows Updater wanted to install a new version of the downloader, but was unable to. I worked through a troubleshooter (KB822798) and it asked to unregister and re-register a list of dlls. That allowed updates to start, but later I got a message that said the same dlls I had re-registered were not signed by MS and could make the system unstable. Did I want to continue or remove them? I decided I would be back where I started if I removed them, so continued.
I managed to update to SP2, but had continuing problems with getting security updates to install, with Oracle having services that would not start, and a total failure to install the Visual Studio beta from CD. I decided to look for viruses again and ewido found not-a-virus.tool.autoloader. Cleaned that.
I decided to change drives - and tried to install a new SATA drive and there got the same message as above. That turns out to be because XP has to load SATA drivers at the "Press F6 for SCSI drivers" point. Ucch, I didn't have a floppy drive in this machine, and the one I installed got recognized by the bios, but just ran all the time, so wouldn't recognize a floppy. So, now I can use the 2nd SATA drive as a slave, but not a primary. (How did I manage to install on the old SATA drive in the first place?)
For now, I'm stuck with trying to fix the old primary So:
Is there a way to deal with the serious error message?
1) The replacement drive installer said that the primary drive was not seen by the bios and to turn autodetect to automatic. It is turned on and it shows the drive as being recognized.
2) Is this related to the signature problem? If so, I couldn't follow the rest of the troubleshooter to restore the signatures on the dlls.
Is there any way to install the new SATA drive as primary?
(Why would the floppy I installed not work? It was from an old machine) Then I would try to low level format the original, or dump it.
