I wonder if someone could help me?
I am using windows 98 on a Time computer with a 400 mhz processor. I used msconfig to disable stimon and now I can't upload pictures from my digital camera. When I connect the camera, I get a message

"STIMON caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 0177:bff7b997.
Registers:Etc"

My scanner still works?

I then found a web site :-

and I followed the instructions about renaming the stimon file and removing the registry links but all to no avail! If it makes any difference, the camera is a cannon ixus 300

I have renamed the stimon.old back to stimon.exe and I still get the same message.

I can't find Stimon.exe on the windows 98 disc. Is it in one of the zipped files and if so what do I do then?

I hope someone can help!

I can be emailed at Donham@cableinet.co.uk

try reloading the stimon file:
Start
Settings
Taskbar & Start Menu
Click Start Menu Programs tab
Click Add
Type C:\Windows\System \stimon.exe

Click Next
Scroll down and select Startup
Click Next
Click Finish

Muck Luck

Thanks for the input, mscallisto. But I have just tried what you said and I still get.- This program (Stimon) has caused an illegal opperation..

"STIMON caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 0177:bff7b997.
Registers:
EAX=00000000 CS=0177 EIP=bff7b997 EFLGS=00000246"

Thanks anyway

Then the stimon.exe on your hard drive may be bad and needs replacing from the 98CD you DON'T have.

At some time you will most likely need a 98CD and should try to get one.

Have you completely UN-instaled your scanner then RE-installed it and any other software that came with it?

Scanners etc. usually come with most of the software they need.

I do have the windows 98 cd! I have tried to find stimon on the cd and the search comes up blank! I can only presume it is in one of the zipped files??? but which one or is there a proper way to install it?

Sorry, for the second part of your thread. No I haven't uninstalled the scanner and it still works! Should I uninstall and re install it?

Stimon.exe is in the Win98_42.cab file

In Win98, just go to Start > Run > and type in: SFC
Choose to extract one file from the CD.
Browse the HD for stimon.exe and extract it.
Save the backup if you really think it's worthwhile (I don't).
Restart. Cheers,
Jim

Insert your 98 CD

With explorer Right mouse click Win98_46.cab (98SE) or
Win98_42.cab (98) in your CD

click View

Locate stimon.exe

Right mouse click stimon.exe and click extract

Put it back into windows system

much luck

Thanks mscallisto and comtech.
I did the "Start > Run > and typed in: SFC
I Chose to extract the file from the CD.
I Browsed the HD for stimon.exe and I extracted it.
I rebooted I pluged in the camera and it said.

"STIMON caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 0177:bff7b997.
Registers: Etc.

Well now it's a bit more difficult to find the bugger!

For starters:

1) Do you only have one stimon.exe on your drive?

2) Have you completely UN-instaled your scanner then RE- installed it and any other software that came with it?

3) Pray for help from someone smarter than me!!

Mscallisto
1 Yes, there is only 1 stimon in the windows system folder.

2 No I haven't done anything with the scanner.

3 Should I pray or should I un and Re the scanner???

I have said that the scanner works fine, haven't I

Donham

Ok Guys,
I have sfc'd Kernel32.dll
I have un and Reinstalled the scanner,
I have un and re installed the camera software,
I have rebooted inbetween each one of these opperations. I thought however, before I go to bed, I would try it!

I plugged the camera in, and guess what it says......
You've got it! -

"STIMON caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 0177:bff7b997.
Registers:"

I had this problem with one of my faculty. I dug all over the web for an answer. Some possible causes mentioned the use of a scanner with an HP device which can cause stimon.exe to not run. However, this faculty member did not have an HP device.

This is what I did to try to fix it. I created a shortcut to stimon.exe in the startup folder. So that when Windows boots up it will start stimon.exe.

About 50% of the time this would work. When the user went to reboot and stimon.exe decided to start on startup, he did NOT get the illegal operation. When stimon.exe decided to not start on startup, he GOT the illegal operation. So my guess was stimon.exe would not start up on startup causing the illegal operation.

To fix this problem, I created a shortcut on the desktop to stimon.exe. I told the user when he gets the illegal operation to double click on stimon.exe to manually start it. If he doesn't get the illegal operation then assume stimon had successfully started in startup. He has not had any problem with his scanner since.

There is a better way to fix this problem through the sysedit files, I think you can make it load at a "run=" somewhere in there. I chose to not go this route because I plan to format his machine shortly and upgrade him to Win2k.

I do not know if this information is useful but I thought I might add my two cents.

Thanks,

Thanks Jade1001 but I think your problem was different. If I do ctrl-alt-del Stimon is there so it is obviously there and running from start up

I really wanted you to check for multiple copies of stimon.exe anywhere on your hard drive not just in windows\system.

I was hoping you has a "good" one and maybe even a "bad" one that needs deleting.

My good one for w98 is 112kb in size and version 4.10.2222.

You can probably tell that I'm fresh out of good advice.

Errors of the type "page fault" etc. often time can be misleading as to where the problem really is.

Unless someone else comes up with the right stuff in a reasonable timeframe you may consider reloading 98.

Hi guys thanks for all your help on this, I hope you have all had a good weekend I have been away which was good.
I still have not got to the bottom of this and maybe realoading windows would be the best thing to do!!!

In answer to mscallisto's previous question.

Yes I only have 1 stimon.exe on the hard disk It is 112 K and version 4.10.98

If I decide to reload windows, can I just bung in the windows dick and install it or do I have to take windows out and start again?

But before I do that I have just been looking at the registry and the key I removed See

has not put itself back I have just imported it back again and should probably reboot. If there is any improvement I will let you know.
