Steps to Optimize a website

I know in order to search well on Google, you must have a lot of internal and external links, as well as keyword-rich text. Also titles play an important role.

Is there anything that I've said is wrong? My friend seems to think that the ammount of links on your page (internal) won't affect the searching and therefore he claims it doesn't help you rank higher.

I seem to think that with all of these in combination, you will search higher:

1. The right title
2. A lot of internal and external links
3. Keyword-rich text

Suggestions? Comments? I'm just trying to get an idea on exactly what you professionals are doing out there, and WHY?

good internal links get visitors around your site and help with determining the topic of each page.

Google places a lot of weight (too much really) on Anchor Text, as well as good content, don't

check out the forums in this thread they are the best around and most SEO myths are soon dispelled.

don't get hung up on keyword rich text with the idea that x number of words with a KW desity of 3.36822456 recurring is perfect for all sites.

It's there to sell your product not to impress the SEs
