XBK is done in LD 143 on Opt 11 systems after doing a regular backup in LD 43. This will not work on Opt 61/Opt 81 and later type systems. This may also be blocked on an Opt 11 if you have external back up media configured and directly connected to the system.
Machine Type 1111 is an old Option 61, to do a backup LD 43 - EDD
this will backup to both hard drives, and one of the floppy disks.
If you require an off site backup replace the floppy disk, and keep the newly backed up one as your backup, you can also use BKO (Back Up to Floppy Only).
At your release, the floppies may either be the 2 or 4 meg ones.
Are you certain that your tape drive for your Meridian Mail is broken?. Have you tried another tape?

A 61c backs up to a standard floppy disk (LD 43 - EDD). The Meridian Mail system backs up to a SCSI SLR tape drive that uses up to I believe 2.5GB tapes. There is no USB port or flash drive you can back this up to.
As David states, try another tape. I would also try running a head-cleaning cartridge through the tape drive a couple of times then try backing up again. If no dice, then you likely have a bad SLR drive (and finding one that'll work with these dinosaurs can be a bit tricky), or a bad SCSI bus.
What I would do next is try and do another backup. If it fails, check the SEER log in MerMail and it should point you in the right direction.
I have hot-swapped tape drives without any trouble, though I honestly don't know if you are supposed to or not. Can't remember the exact procedure to back up MMail, but you can find it in the menus. If you can't find it, let me know and next time I visit our PBX, I'll log in and write down the exact steps. By the way, you don't necessarily need to use the exact same tape drive. In fact, I found an old IBM SLR drive when our tape drive power supply died. Works fine and it was dirt cheap!
