How do I find what BIOS I have and how do I update it. Is it necessary to update the BIOS. Are there any risks involved ?

regards

Usually during boot you can see version of the bios.
Update proccess depends on pc type. Information about new version and how to update bios you can find on the web site of pc producer

DO NOT update your BIOS unless it is absolutely needed to resolve a problem you are having. If you make a mistake, or something happens like a power fluctuation when you are doing it, that motherboard could be left dead.

If you are having a specific problem with hardware or software, post for more help first. It may be something simple that we can help with.

Updating BIOS is something I rarely do.

Thanks for the answer.
Yes, as per your post I am having a problem (tips from friends suggest to upgrade BIOS) and I had mentioned in the W2K professional Foruum..Again here below for your reference..

I brought a new Lexmark printer and hooked it with my w2k compaq presario laptop (brought 3 yrs ago) machine using a USB cable which says it is compatible with USB 1,1.1,2.0 versions.
My machine is not able to detect the lexmark printer.
The new hardware wizard yields no new devices found.

Also in device manager the "generic USB hub" device gives an error saying drivers not installed.

The same printer works fine when connected to a XP home desktop. I guess the culprit is in USB etc..any ideas?

That's rule one of bios updates...I've not had one fail yet but, that's still rule one.

You need the W2K chipset drivers for the motherboard to clear up the Generic USB Hub Device issue. They will be either on the software that shipped with your laptop or on compaq's website.
