I work for a public school system. Our bandwidth is provided to us by the state. We are currently maxed out (15mb) so we are trying to come up with some creative ideas for additional bandwidth. What we are wanting to do is statically route certain ip addresses (such as youtube, teachertube, etc) through a consumer level cable modem (8mb) so our state provided bandwidth can be used for more mission essential apps. Our core Cisco 3750 switch has 8 ports open, but we also have another 24 port 3750 and a Cisco 24 port 3550 switch available also.

My first question is can this be done with the equipment I have, and how can I configure the switch to do this? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

What kind of WAN connection do you have there? You mentioned a cable modem but do you have MPLS, Frame Relay, etc?

I'm not completely sure how it works or if it is appropriate here, but there is such a thing as Route Redistribution of traffic. If you know the IP address, you might be able to assign traffic for Youtube and Teachertube to run out one interface and all traffic out another one. Don't quote me, but I was readying about it today in some of the CCNP documentation.

Hope this helps.

I did some more thinking about your situation and maybe an extended access list would be more of what you're looking for. You can set the access list to filter any incoming traffic destined for the internet to route out the interface connected to the cable modem. All other traffic for your WAN would head out another interface. This would be if you have a router hooked up. You may need to describe a little more of how your switches are integrated in your network to get a better idea of how these lists could help.

Policy based routing (PBR) is what you're looking for
