Is it possible to set permanent route on dial up connection that will stay in routing table after reconnecting? I'm trying to accomplish this with interface statement, but there must be IP address too, which is dynamic. OS is Windows XP.
Why can you not add a route to the connection so that the route re-appears on every re-connect?
You obviously can't route through an interface that does not exists.
Are you trying to get XP to autodial or something?
I'm trying to add another route to VPN connection via dial up. It's clear to me that route can't be add to interface that does not exists, although I didn’t succeed in adding any route by its interface, only by IP address and interface.
How can a route be added to the connection so that reappears on every reconnect?
You can use the -p switch with the ROUTE ADD command (in XP anyhow) and it will be persistent across reboots. Not sure what the impact would be with a dialup connection, though, nor am I able to test it.
What do you mean "another route"? Do you already have one route to the VPN? Is it via high speed internet?
When you connect via dial up, a default route is setup for the dial up connection, so you would not need another route to the VPN. Explain in more detail what you are trying to do.
When connected to VPN, route to gateway at VPN has metric 1, and route to gateway at ISP has metric 2. I would like to redirect some of traffic through ISP gateway with permanent route, if that is possible anyway.
A-ha! Now I understand what the problem is. What VPN software are you using? What you are trying to do is called a 'split-tunnel' connection and some VPN implementations support it, and some do not.
To disable the Use Default Gateway on Remote Network setting in the VPN dial-up connection item on the client computer: 1. Double-click My Computer, and then click the Network and Dial-up Connections link.
2. Right-click the VPN connection that you want to change, and then click Properties.
3. Click the Networking tab, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in the Components checked are used by this connection list, and then click Properties.
4. Click Advanced, and then click to clear the Use default gateway on remote network check box.
5. Click OK, click OK, and then click OK.
I don't want to disable default gateway on remote network. I want to add route to dial up connection. I can do that, only manually, for every connection. My question was can I add permanent route to dial up connection somehow.
paraf,
What you're trying to do kind of defeats the purpose of a secure VPN.
If you change the default gateway as serbtastic suggests or try to add another route to the internet, you are actually creating a huge security hole for the network you are VPN'd into.
I would strongly recommend against this.
Actually I’m trying to do the same thing as well, this makes perfect sense and does not defeats the purpose of a secure VPN.
Example
I have some private services that run a private ip at my corporate offices but I don’t want to manually to activate vpn whenever I want to use it. The idea will be that when ever a request is made for a specific ip or network, in the example the corporate private ip the vpn connects autumnally so I dot have to.
This is may case and I have also been trying to find a solution for this. The problem I find is that the interface created by the vpn is only available while the connection is active, this make it impossible (at least for me to add a static route)
