I have installed 3 t7406 telephones about 3 month ago. 1 base has 2 phone and 1 base has 1 phone. They all have bad static on them. The static goes down if you turn the volume down but then you are hard to hear. I am at a loss. Is it the base? The phones? or a crappy design from Nortel? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

Make sure your dip switches are set up for two base stations at the same site.

Also what type of enviroment is it?

Just for the heck of it...determine if any wireless ethernet devices or other 2.4ghz cordless phones are being used. Unplug 'em and see if the static stops. Any other interference nearby? Look outside!

these phones are in the 900MHz range ...so no interference from teh WLAN etc ...
try a differnt location for the base (no metal sheets/ shelves/ closets near the base)
try with one base and then see if hte problem happens when both are functioning

They Avaya / Lucent Partner wireless sets also operate on the same frequency as the Norstars and as far as I know there is no way to have both in the same area.

The enviroment is a house built in late 1800's. The problem is very close to the base or far away. The bases dip switches are set properly. I will go on sight this week and see if there is any other enviromental issues. But I just have real bad issues with these phones. Thanks for your thoughs.

Phoneboy! can you help me I am trying to install the 7406 in our small office. When I plug the phone into a 7310 base and then into the wall neither the cordless or my 7310 base phone works. What am I doing wrong??? Any ideas would be great. Thank You in Advance.

Phoneboy,
Did you set the base units to different ranges via the dip switches. One high and one low.

I also would do as stated above and turn one off to see if it's the problem.

Are the base units mounted at least 6 feet off the floor as stated in the install guide? I have found that if they are just sitting on a desk, it doesn't work as well.

Another thing to consider is how close the base unit is to a TV or PC monitor. They are not fond of whatever interfearance they throw out when too close.

T7406 phones suck
M7410 phones suck

Same S#$% different pile

Install Companion, Spectralink, or Engenius.
Perhaps new cordless offering in 7.0 will prove to be acceptable.

you MUST have the base stations at least 8 feet apart! If you put them 8 feet from each other they will work good.

Take the battery off the handsets and check the datecodes for your handsets, Nortel built these for a whole year with out of spec parts, which create, yep you guessed it, static, handsets that won't sync....
Dates effected are Sept 01 through Aug 02. Nortel is using small green dots on the handset product label to signify that there were repaired by Nortel, and the problem fixed. Sounds like you may have one of these sets that have not been updated.
