I had a weird problem pop up. Maybe someone here has had a similar problem start this way.

A user on a copper run of about 800 feet with a 2616 complained about static and not being able to understand people on the speakerphone. She called me and I heard it. So, I replaced the phone.

I got the phone back to my desk and tested it. It works fine.

Her new phone works fine on speakerphone also. Doesn't seem like a persistent wiring problem.

Then, another user on a different 2616 about 800 feet from the pbx mentioned they had a garbled speakerphone. When I got over there to test it, the problem was gone.

Ever seen behavior like this before? Did it grow into something you could then fix?

Thanks,
Buster

had that problem come and go, and move, was a bad fiber between opt 11 cabs. anything in common between the two sets? card, tie cable? either can change with temp, or humidity.. larger system it could be a network card or controller.. try to find the item that is common to the two users. might be your weak point.. glass is best viewed in the dark, a tight bend will glow

These phones were recently moved. They remained on the same TN though. Before the move they were in the same building as the switch, without these problems. After the move they're in a different building still on copper, just several hundred more feet of copper.

Thanks,
Buster

i have digital sets on 2000 ft of copper without problems, if your cable has a bad spot, (water) that almost always causes static. i good way to test is to open a pair on both ends, read between the pair and ground, any reading above open is a problem..

Ah, good point John. I'll have to check that.

The problems are intermittent, but a short to ground or pierced cable could cause this too.

The big concern though is the only connection these phone's have in common is the 300pr cable to the other building. I sure don't want to have to pull that and replace it.

I wonder if a fiber connected cabinet for my option 61c would be cheaper than replacing that copper. I do have some single-mode fiber running over there.

I'm keeping an eye on this to see if the problem spreads. So far it's just a couple of isolated incidents that can not be reproduced.

Thanks,
Buster

Depending on how many sets you intend on having you could install a Mini Carrier Remote, has a max of 6 slots if I'm not mistaken, and will support ESAM, Emergency Stand Alone Mode, if your fibre is lost. The other would be to install an IPE shelf or fibre remote, this will give you 16 card slots but does not support ESAM.

more common to lose a few pair to a lite damage staple, etc then a full 300, unless it gets wet water is a major pain as we well know. a fiber remote would be my choice,i would rather run one fiber jumper then 100's or jumpers.. no lightning

If it's water, we can just put up with the annoyance during the rare showers we get here in Tucson, Arizona.

If I had been here when they purchased the switch, I would have spec'd an IPE/Carrier in each building connected via fiber. The "ESAM" option sounds interesting, I just might have to read up on that for future reference.

Ya, with the 300 pair, it's a huge block of lightning protection in each building. Huge splices too.

I Repair and refurbish 2616 phones and they usually have handsfree problems and a static or crackling sound problems.
Usually it is a leaky capacitor or a cold solder.

Ya right, drying off. Just got hammered by a monsoon.

Na, this is our wet time of the year. You'll wake up in the morning and it'll be clear skies. By noon you start to see some clouds building. In the afternoon the clouds explode in size and darkness, then dump out lightning along with raindrops the size of golf balls.

Summer sucks here, but not as bad as winter up north.

Being a new start-up company, budget is tight. They didn't spec a battery backup for the phone switch when they bought it (just before I came on board). This area is prone to power failures during lightning storms, and we've gone through several power outages where the switch didn't come back from the cold start and had to be warm started.

Needless to say, I now have battery backup on it's way. It'll probably get here just in time for the monsoon/lightning season to end.

Leaky capacitor or cold solder joint in side the phone. Could be that too. Just an intermittent problem right now. The phone's are still under warranty, but I'd likely get a replacement phone with the same problem. We'll see how it goes though. I haven't heard any more reports of problems.

i replace 10 sets a week with 8000 on site, so a bad one everynow and then is going to happen. the no battery problem can be massive. check with your vendor to see if you have lightning protection on your warrenty. i hate it when i go out to fix a lightning caused switch and the cust, with maint gets hit with a 50k invoice. around here an "act of god" coverage requires a special paragraph, and price tag
