I've XP Home (upgraded from the lovely ME). My "startup" and "shutdown" sounds do not play. When I preview them they play. I've done the "apply" so that is not the issue. All other assigned sounds (I beleive) play correctly in preview and when they are supposed to "play". I've tried a variety of sound schemes and I also checked to make sure nothing is muted or disabled or that volume levels are sufficient. etc. The peculiar thing is that for whatever reason the startup and shutdown sounds do not play. Of course I can live without this, but just curious. Might it be another software program preventing the startup/shutdown sounds from playing (I've got ems free surfer, zone alarm, spybot, adaware, AVG and a few others running).

Interesting... Thanks for the info. I will have to try that out over the weekend (hopefully) and I will let you know what I found out.

OK I think I have finally found out what the problem is...
Under Sound and Audio Devices Properties, I click hardware tab and select Audio Codecs. I go to properties and I see 3 things listed,
Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec
Microsoft PCM Converter
Lernout And Hauspie Codecs

For the lernout and hauspie codecs when I double click it, it is all messed up, nothing is choosen and when I choose something it just goes away and comes back. Is this codec even supposed to be there? Anybody know what the default Audio Codecs for windows should be? And also how do you reinstall these codecs because I am so certain its these stupid codecs because at one point in this computers life I believe I installed one of those STUPID codec packs which messes up everything =/. Anybody know anything about this?

YAY I fixed it!!!!
My MS Audio compression was messed up, this is how I fixed it...

Add New Hardware
Yes I have already connected the hardware
Add a new hardware device
Install manually from a list
Sound, video and game controllers
Have Disk
Browse
Windows\System32\mmdriver.inf
OK
Lists codecs and I reinstalled Microsoft Audio Compression Manager

Thanks everybody for your help and I hope this helps anybody that has problems like this in the future!

I am a decidedly not a fan of the 'Codec' packs that have floated around forever on the Web. The choices are poor at times, and you lose the upgrade features you would get if they were individually installed.

. Use Add/Remove programs and remove any non-MSFT codecs found.

. Upgrade to Windows Media Player 10

. Use the default Microsoft codecs:
If a codec is needed and is missing, let WMP 10 find it on the Web and download it for you.

Well done, Stealth625, and thanks for posting to let everybody know how you solved your problem.

I hope your resolution works for me too. I can't try it until I get back to work on Monday though.

YAY too!!!!!
It worked for me as well!!
Go Stealth - you rock!
Thanks everybody for your help too!

Stealth

I have had this problem for a similar length of time and almost gave up. I too have a Creative Audigy card (coinsidence?!) and have the greyed out box (which no-one had before I saw your thread). Will try the fix tonight.
At last - SANITY!!!!!!

Special Thanks to Stealth,

I also have been fighting with "No sytem sounds and greyed out button" problem for a month. I applied the MS Audio compression Fix and enjoy sound once again. It also worked for another user at a another forum. They also thank You !!
